| 1. Melt shortening (heat for about 1 minute and 20 seconds in the microwave on high), let cool for about 5 minutes. |

| 2. Add sugar, molasses and egg, beat well. Hint: Use the same measuring container for the molasses as the shortening. |

| 3. Sift together dry ingredients . . . |

| 4. . . . And add to first mixture. |

| 5. Chill for 20-30 minutes. |
 |
| 6. Preheat oven to 375°. |
 |
| 7. Form in 2.5 cm (1 inch) balls, roll in 1/4 cup granulated sugar and plave on greased cookie sheets 5 cm (2 inches) apart. |

| 8. Bake at 375° for 8-10 minutes. Note: Tops will be slightly gooey. Let cool. |

| Makes about 2 dozen 5 cm (2 in) cookies. Takes about 1 hour to complete. |
