The Nativity Story stars a young woman from New Zealand who seems to be a competent actress. I’m sure she works hard at her craft, and she was convincing in several key scenes. But overall I thought she was not the right person to play Mary, the mother of Jesus. Maybe it was the choice of the director to have her portrayed as . . . hmmm . . . grumpy, cranky, moody, rebellious. That’s how I was at 16. Maybe I just expect more of Mary; I don’t know. I enjoyed the growth she experienced as it was portrayed in the movie. I liked the way she grew into her relationship with Joseph, and how Elisabeth was her confidante and mentor. I have to say, though, that I’m somewhat disenchanted by the fact that the actress is in real life an unwed expectant teenager. I think Mary . . . I don’t know . . . deserves better. The Church is really careful in choosing actors to play key characters in religious history, and it shows in their productions. They may not have the most experience or training, but the spirit of the movie is enhanced by the goodness of those actors, and in my opinion it makes for a better overall film. Just a thought.
