I’ve been busier than normal, which is why I haven’t written in a while. I got new glasses (see?) a few weeks ago, and I went to a wonderful concert of the Minnesota Orchestra doing a toast to New York. They played everything from Tchaikovsky and Dvorak to Cage and beyond, including four or five pieces by living composers. It was quite possibly the most diverse concert I’ve ever been to. (The John Cage piece, for example, while not the famous “4’ 33”,” was scored for table, floor, newspaper, and book. It was performed by the very hard working percussion section.)
And last week I pulled out last year’s garden and planted new vegetables. It’s early for planting in Minnesota, but with the wacky weather this year we’re just as likely to have a real spring now as a fake one. And it’s been nice so far--at least above freezing, with plenty of rain. It was in the 80s on Monday.
My other major project of the past few weeks is getting syn·co·pa going--it’s a flute/harp (piano) duo Gerardo and I are putting together. We’re having a logo designed and will get photos taken and then some business cards and larger cards--and then we’ll probably do some wedding shows and a few free gigs just to get our name out there. I registered syncopa.org today and so we’ll also have to get a web site built. But we figured, hey, we enjoy playing together; why not do it for money? So we’ll see how I manage to fit that in to all my spare time. Actually, I’m really looking forward to it! So--our tag line (Gerardo came up with it as well as the name, which is what you call a pickup note in Spanish, although I altered the spelling) is “Heavenly music for your heavenly moments.” Cute, eh?
